Chapter Thirty-Five of Keeping Score In America: The Poetry of Patience By Michael Moriarty Oh, I'm certain some might declare, "Michael, that's the past! Those days are over!! It all happened decades ago!!!" Obviously I don't agree. It will forever be payback time in any encounter between Finland and Russia. Particularly when the President of Neo-Soviet Russia is a former member of the KGB and its chronic apologist.
Particularly when the Olympics are being enacted in Socchi!
There is, of course, the incidence between a Russian and a Fin on a long-distance course and… well… that is being examined and reexamined. The press coverage about which is difficult to find. Perhaps because the judges are still ruling on the incident. This encounter on the Hockey ice, however? Historic. Well… poetically historic. What poetry? The poetry of Patience… and "what goes around, comes around." Surpassing even Finland's Patient Impatience is Canada's True Grit! Canada sweeps the men's semi-final and the women's final in hockey. The men face Sweden on the ice tomorrow but I must submit this, at the latest, tomorrow (Saturday) morning. I love the Olympics!!! Few events… anywhere in the Universe… could ever be quite as thrilling!!!!! Finland and Canada? Neither are super-powers. Yet in hockey they have both brought tears to my eyes. Why? The artistry of sports. Combining strength, discipline, cunning, inspiration and pure tenacity? All five at the same time?! ![]() Heroic. Pure heroism. The new advice to all of men's hockey? "Play like Canadian women!!" Michael Moriarty is a Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor who starred in the landmark television series Law and Order from 1990 to 1994.
