The Haunted Heaven: Chapter Twenty Six: Florence 1964 vs. Today
By Michael Moriarty
I was 23 then.
I had had the privilege of growing up with musical genius perpetually in my ears. My father's record collection had supplied that. However, nothing had ever assaulted my eyes in the same way.
My young vision had been consuming a grotesque ballet of pretence and corruption surrounding a marriage made in hell.
Oh, the theater and Shakespeare had somehow offered an escape of sorts and the appearance of an artist such as Paul Scofield on the stage of Stratford, Ontario drew me to Theater's glimpse of human courage and nobility, albeit a sad but moving effort toward higher meanings within life.
Forever plunging back to earth, however.
Then Florence assaulted my eyes!
Within one week I had become certain that nothing was impossible for Man!
As long as Man remained addicted to the Holy Bible, all the heroic and horrifying stories contained within it could be captured by the arts, by all the arts.
Of course, Michelangelo's David in the Piazza della Signoria had already been glimpsed in prints and reproductions that somehow had found their way around the dormitories of Dartmouth College.
Still, there is nothing quite like The David when seen amidst hundreds of onlookers in the exceptionally naked light of day.
It is massively erotic!
And with Il Biancone, The Big White One, the God Neptune staring at The David with a mixture of jealousy and love?
How can beauty so redeem Man?
If it tells the Truth!!
The Divine Truth!!!
Il Biancone is big and not a very attractive specimen when compared to The David.
The combination of Neptune and David, however, encompassing one side of the Piazza, in its two character drama, tells a massively large story about human manhood itself.
"Even the Gods were jealous of David!"
He was the creation of the true God, Jehovah, of the Judeo Christian Civilization.
Therefore the experience of Florence, 1964, was as much a religious enlightenment as it was an intellectual, emotional and spiritual awakening.
Now, as I realize the task before me with my Second Concerto for Orchestra, to create the performance I would have attempted, had I ever performed as King Lear.
Another Concerto for Orchestra, perhaps, will arise from Hamlet.
Hmmm … with Lear and Hamlet, two sure challenges connected profoundly to my spiritual life?
The journey of King Lear, whose allusions to the pagan gods clearly define him and his kingdom as pre-Christian.
Hamlet, on the other hand, is the great Christian … Catholic tragedy, mind you.
The joys pouring out of me now are resplendent with my liberation in Florence, 1964!
My lesson before the evils of Science and a Godless Progressivism?
What is the lesson?
With all of the Progress of Man, none of it has changed the fundamental laws of Good and Evil.
Those laws are eternal and now the worldwide Communist efforts to forever erase Good and Evil from the mind of Man, to train humanity into a Marxist servitude and inevitable slavery?
Evil appears to be winning. With Communism's certain hold on China, its renaissance in neo-Soviet Russia, and the appeasements offered to a Progressive New World Order which an avowed Marxist in the White House has accelerated, what might we expect?
The tightening fist, no matter who is in the Oval Office.
Relatively few Americans have fought for the right of gestating infants to live.
Who will fight for an adult American's right to be individually free?
Fewer than one might expect.
Again I ask why?
The Tea Party's effect on the House of Representatives has been milder than the 2011 election returns might have indicated. The leading candidates for the Republican primary, Gingrich and Romney, are both bipartisan politicians, "running with the hare and hunting with the hounds", and determined to remain Republicans-in-name-only.
Political duplicity will not overturn the effect of almost ten decades of Progressivism. The New World Order is already and undeniably a bipartisan creation.
America, in short and despite a few brave Tea Partiers, is erasing herself before our eyes.
As I've said before, the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, would make a better American President than either Romney or Gingrich.
Thank God I moved here to British Columbia! Perhaps American individual freedom only exists now as an export to foreign countries. How long, however, will Canadian independence and sovereignty survive in this ruthlessly Progressive New World Order? Perhaps as long as Global Warming and other lies of the New World Order can be kept at bay.
My joy in the Italian Renaissance was inspired by its artists.
Not its scientists.
