Winners and losers

Winners:

Conservative Party of Canada
Fairly obvious given that Stephen Harper did what I thought he'd probably never do: become prime minister of Canada. How long that will last is up in the air but let's give the CPC its due, it knocked off the golem. Bonus points for a PM who isn't from Quebec or Ontario. + 25 seats

New Democrats
They picked up fewer seats than most projected but they did increase their share of the popular vote. If the Conservatives pass them over for a coalition government, it won't mean a heck of a lot though. +10 seatrs

Losers:

Liberal Party of Canada
Again, fairly obvious. Anytime you lose power you lose the election. They took hits everywhere outside of Maritime Canada and a number of high profile candidates went down to defeat. -32 seats

Bloc Quebecois
They captured less than 50 per cent of the vote in the single province they ran. Does that spell the end of Quebec separatism? Not in the long-term but the results are hardly an endorsement of Gilles Duceppe or his agenda. Even if the Bloc somehow gets into a coalition government, it undermines their status as a protest party. -3 seats

Green Party of Canada
For the first time you received public money to run your campaigns. End result: no seats. Hopefully we won't hear a damned thing from you ever again.
