THE HEROES OF 2003: Radley Balko lists who he believes are the libertarian heroes of 2003. Some are well-known names, others less so. All good people though.

It's funny... I was just thinking about Congressman Feeney some minutes ago - He certainly seems like a rising star for the principles of limited government in Congress - and it's great that he was able to stand up to the statist policies of the Bush administration on the issues of the spending on Iraq and the Medicare bill. We need more people like that in Congress, and within the Republican Party. And of course, there is the great Ron Paul - he must be on a list like this, and not just this year - every year.

As for Congressman Ford, I know that he has been recognized as one of the more progressive Democrats - that is common among younger African-Americans. On fiscal issues, Harold Ford, Jr., has taken some positive positions, and he is, as Mr. Balko says, a rising star within the Democratic Party.

Congressman Feeney, Paul, and Ford are great leaders, and they have taken some bold stands during their time in office. Hopefully, they will continue to do so, and we will see more people in our federal government who will do things like this, including having the courage to go against the party or administration line, when it conflicts with good principles and or constitutional values. Let's hope that we will see more people like that in this new year.
