SWANSONG FOR TEDDY K? One of the constant refrains in the coverage of last week's Democratic convention, at least in the Boston media, was that Ted Kennedy's speech represented his "swansong." Maybe, but at the risk of disappointing some of our readers, I don't see any reason to be certain that this is the case.

Ted Kennedy will probably not live as long as, say Strom Thurmond, because of his hard lifestyle. But he's still just 72. Even without the home court advantage, he'll probably be a player in the next convention four years from now. Why? Because he is going to serve until he dies or is incapacitated, and is going to remain a major force in the Democratic caucus as long as he remains in decent mental health. I see little reason to bet against another six to ten years for Teddy in public life.
