01/23/2005 Archived Entry: "Johnny Carson"

JOHNNY CARSON, R.I.P.: Just days after reports that the he was occasionally writing jokes for David Letterman, the retired King of Late Night has died. The longtime "Tonight Show" host had been battling emphysema. Another link to television's golden age lost.

UPDATE: Steve Sailer has some thoughts on Carson representing a more intelligent time in late-night TV.

I have no doubt that Carson had a lot of intellectual curiosity. Something that people forget is that he was an amateur astronomer and sometimes had astronomers on the show. He'd sit there at rapt attention while the cat would talk about galaxies and what not and you could almost hear the audience impatiently waiting for the next celebrity to come on the show. Johnny didn't care...I loved that about him.

It's odd to see all the people I grew up watching now dying. All generations pass away, but that doesn't make it any less sad.

The same thought occurs to me everytime someone of Carson's generation passes on. There are fewer and fewer of them left.
