John Wick, Chapter One By Michael Moriarty
So! Let’s go to the beginning. And, there we see?! The power of a puppy on screen. All puppies are almost universally adorable and, how clever of the cleverest of film-makers to know that to make a puppy the second character of this two-character beginning to a two-character film?! We’re hooked. Until, of course, the puppy is killed, a fact I already know from having seen the entire 3rd Chapter of this film series. Then, of course, if the rest of the characters in the film are as fascinating as that puppy we’ve already lost to a psychopath, we will want to know who the diabolical monster is that killed this puppy and we can see justice served! Well, if this is all we’ve seen so far, we have no idea what we are in store for except perhaps for an entertaining film. We have, from this initial and very well-worn style of the beginning, an entire film series that will, most undoubtedly, make film history! We have no idea that the third episode of this film series will, indeed, change the entire style of actions films and possibly change the course of action films forever. Meanwhile, the first chapter grows increasingly, yes, dramatic, to use an old and most out-worn term, but?! Not merely dramatic; but profoundly dramatic! Why? One of what I assume will be a frequent appearance: the classic theme of “Father and Son”. Or, “Leader and Follower”! Or, in the end, the pursuit of “Who is in charge?!” An “anti-hero” in a dystopian human race is a hero! Plain and simple. And a possibly Christian killer?! When The Boss needs killers to do His job? He finds them. Michael Moriarty is a Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor who starred in the landmark television series Law and Order from 1990 to 1994.
